The University of Texas El Paso was placed on a three-year probation by the NCAA because of payments of about $62,150 by a former head coach to students on the track team.
UTEP’s women’s and men’s track teams are prohibited from taking part in NCAA championship competitions during the 1986-87 and 1987-88 school years. UTEP will also have to forfeit its 1983 Division I men’s cross-country championship.
