Council Expands S. Africa Policy

Responding to a telephone plea from South African Bishop Desmond Tutu in Johannesburg and a personal one from Mayor Tom Bradley, the Los Angeles City Council today expanded the city’s anti-apartheid policy by banning some city purchases from firms doing business in South Africa.
The measure, passed unanimously in final action after a year of legal fine-tuning, will affect contracts worth more than $107 million, or about 13% of the contracts entered into by the city in the last fiscal year.
