Cora, Padres’ No. 1 Draft Choice in 1985, Is Stabbed After Game

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. — Joey Cora, the No. 1 selection of the San Diego Padres in the June 1985 baseball draft, was stabbed twice in a postgame altercation Saturday night, police said.
Cora, 21, a second baseman for the Beaumont Golden Gators of the Texas League, was attacked while waiting with other players to board a bus after the Gators lost to San Antonio 1-0, Police Det. Richard Roberts said.
He was in stable condition and undergoing surgery for abdominal wounds at Medical Center Hospital in San Antonio early today, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Roberts said a few passersby got into an argument with Gator players after the game, left and then returned with a larger crowd. In an ensuing battle, Cora was stabbed, he said.
A San Antonio man was arrested immediately after the fight, and Roberts said police were seeking an aggravated assault charge against the man. No formal charges had yet been filed, however.
Cora lives in Caguas, Puerto Rico, and played last season for Spokane of the Northwest League, where he hit .324 and had 3 homers and 26 RBIs.
