Beatrice Mandel, a former teacher who is president-designate of the UCLA Alumni Assn., and R. Marilyn Lee, corporate director of human resources for Times Mirror Co., have been appointed to two-year terms on the University of California Board of Regents. Both are alumni regents elected by their respective alma maters--Lee by UC Santa Barbara and Mandel by UCLA. Unlike the 22 regents who are appointed by the governor to serve 12-year terms, alumni regents serve two-year terms and are voting members of the board only during their second year. Mandel, a former teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District, is a past president of both the Westside support group for the Los Angeles Philharmonic and the California Lawyers’ Auxiliary Assn. Lee was an attorney in the Los Angeles city attorney’s office for five years before joining Times Mirror, which publishes The Times.
