Raymond Floyd likes the sun; Mike Reid prefers swinging in the rain.
“Everybody would rather be playing in warm, sunny weather,” Floyd said Saturday after tying Reid and Bob Tway for the 54-hole lead in the $600,000 Manufacturers Hanover Westchester golf tournament at Harrison, N.Y.
But Reid disagreed.
“I’m almost more comfortable under these conditions,” he said at the rain-drenched Westchestrer Country Club.
Reid had a three-under-par 68 in the difficult conditions, while Floyd shot a 70 and Tway had a 69.
At 205, they held a two-stroke advantage over Willie Wood, one of three players who began the day tied for the lead. Wood had a 73.
Another shot back were Scott Simpson, Gil Morgan and second-round co-leader Brett Upper. Tom Sieckmann, who also shared the 36-hole lead, had a 75 and was at 209.
Juli Inkster shot a three-under-par 69 at Malvern, Pa., to boost her lead to eight strokes in the third round of the $450,000 LPGA McDonald’s championship.
Her 54-hole total of 204 tied the tournament record set last year by Alice Miller.
Inkster had a round of 15 pars and three birdies over the 6,313-yard White Manor Country Club course.
Her closest challenger was Mary Beth Zimmerman, who shot a 73 for a total of 212.
The tournament, the richest on the LPGA tour, carries a first prize of $67,500. Second place is worth $41,625.
Don January sank a 30-foot birdie putt on the 18th green to break a tie with Chi Chi Rodriguez and take a one-stroke lead in the Senior Players ReUnion Pro-Am at soggy Bent Tree Country Club in Dallas.
January shot a four-under-par 68 for a total of 134, and Rodriguez had a 69 for a 135 after 36 holes of the 54-hole tournament.
Defending champion Peter Thomson of Australia tied the tournament record with a 65 for a 137. He was tied with Al Chandler and Billy Casper. Chandler shot a 70, Casper a 69.
Casper set the tournament record of 65 last year. Gene Littler holds the course record of 64.
Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros shot a third-round 70 at Woburn, England, for a two-stroke in the $300,000 British Masters tournament at 11-under-par 205.
Britain’s Robert Lee, who shot a 73, was second at 207. West Germany’s Bernhard Langer, despite an 8 on the 13th, shot a 72 to join American Rick Hartmann, who had a 70, at 208.
At Lytham St. Annes, England, David Curry won the British Amateur championship by the biggest margin since 1934.
Curry, 22, beat fellow Briton Geoff Birtwell, 11 and 9, in the 36-hole final.
