A U.S. firm is seeking a transpacific cable permit.

Pacific Telecom Cable of Vancouver, Wash., said it applied to the Federal Communications Commission to operate a private submarine fiber optic cable between Washington state and Japan. The firm is 80% owned by Pacific Telecom and 20% by Cable & Wireless PLC. It said it is talking with a Japanese group about a joint venture for such a project.
