A power failure in La Jolla early Wednesday afternoon resulted in a sewage spill, causing county Health Department officials to post a 200-yard stretch of ocean off limits to swimmers and surfers. Dr. John Melbourn, public health engineer, said an undetermined amount of raw sewage flowed into the ocean when the power outage halted pumps at the sewage pump station at 850 Coast Blvd. An area 100 yards on either side of the spill was posted, Melbourn said.
Auxiliary generators were taken to the pump station, and the quarantine is expected to be lifted early today.
