The U.S.-backed Nicaraguan Democratic Force said that one of its rebel patrols is holding eight West German housing volunteers and is willing to free them, but the patrol is pinned down by troops of the leftist Sandinista government. Spokesman Frank Arana said the contras are under attack near Jacinto Baca, 150 miles southeast of Managua. “The Sandinistas are trying to hurt the prisoners and make it look like it was our fault,†he charged.
