An Avalon resident died when his parachute failed to open completely on a jump at California City in the Mojave Desert. The Kern County coroner’s office identified the victim of the weekend incident as Jose Antonio Vega Jr., 29. He jumped with another chutist from a plane cruising at 13,000 feet, said Greg Schaper, president of the California City Parachute Club. Vega’s parachute was released at about 2,500 feet but failed to open fully, and he plummeted to the desert near the municipal airport, Schaper said.
