Richard E. Heckert was named chairman and chief executive of Du Pont, succeeding Edward G. Jefferson, who is retiring.

Heckert, 62, was elected deputy chairman last August and designated at the time to succeed Jefferson. He joined Wilmington, Del.-based Du Pont in 1949 as a research chemist, spending the early part of his career managing research programs involving cellophane and Mylar polyester film.

Heckert was also appointed chairman of the executive committee. Jefferson moves to chairman of the finance committee, succeeding Irving S. Shapiro, who continues as a member of the committee.
