Orange County College Baseball : Fullerton Stretches Its Winning Streak to Seven

Cal State Fullerton’s baseball team stretched its winning streak to seven straight when it swept a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. doubleheader at the University of the Pacific Sunday evening.

Mike Harkey pitched a six-hitter to win the first game, 6-2, and Larry Casian was the 9-3 winner in the second game with big help from John Eccles, who hit his third grand slam home run of the year.

Harkey (9-6) walked one and struck out seven. Both UOP runs in the first game were unearned. Eccles was 3 for 5 with two RBIs in the first game, and Jef Garcia was 2 for 3 with two doubles.

Casian (6-1) went eight innings in the second game to win his sixth straight. Eccles’ grand slam in the sixth was his 12th homer of the season.

Fullerton, in third place in the PCAA, has a conference record of 12-6 and an overall record of 36-17. UOP’s record went to 5-13 in the PCAA, 20-25 overall.

In other PCAA action:

UC Irvine 6-7, San Jose State 9-7--The Anteaters blew a five-run lead to lose the first game, and got a two-run double from Mike Faye with two out in the ninth inning to win the second.

The Anteaters are 8-10 and 19-24-2.

In the opening game, UCI scored six runs in the third inning to take a 6-1 lead, but San Jose rallied to take the lead on a sacrifice fly by Ted Pearl in the sixth inning off reliever Bo Kent.

Faye’s double in the ninth drove in UCI’s winning run, and he scored on Mike Sugar’s double for the two-run margin. Sam Martallah recorded his first victory in relief for Irvine.
