College Baseball Roundup : Brink Pitches Complete Game as UCI Beats San Jose St., 4-2
Sophomore right-hander Craig Brink pitched his fifth complete game of the season to lead UC Irvine past San Jose State, 4-2, Friday night in San Jose in Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. play.
Brink pitched an eight-hitter, giving up runs in the second and the seventh for the Anteaters (7-9, 18-23-2).
Irvine second baseman Ed Clark opened the game with a double and scored on Tom Baine’s single. Baine moved to second on Gene Roumimper’s single, and Doug Kline’s single to right field scored him.
Mark Webster doubled home Stacy Parker in the second after Parker had singled and moved to second on a wild pitch. The Anteaters’ final run came in the eighth when pinch-runner Mike Fay scored on Chris Gallego’s single to right.
Irvine and San Jose (4-12, 17-30) play today at 1 p.m. and conclude the three-game series Sunday.
In California Collegiate Athletic Assn. action:
Chapman 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4 (12 innings)--First baseman Jeff Morrison singled home Mike Cruz in the 12th inning to give the Panthers the win. Cruz opened the inning with a single and stole second.
Ron Hubel (2-1) earned the victory by pitching hitless baseball the final three innings after playing nine innings at third base.
Chapman improved to 12-14 in CCAA play; Dominguez remained in first place with a 19-10 record.
