To protect the endangered Coachella Valley fringe-toed lizard, the California Nature Conservancy has spent $25 million to acquire a 13,000-acre preserve on which the creature lives, just east of Palm Springs. Ranging from 3 inches to 10 inches long, the lizard has seen 95% of its sandy habitat destroyed by development over the years. The acquisition money came from a combination of private donations and state and federal grants.
