Constitutional Rights and the Tapes of Thomas Metzger

This is a postscript to a response to your editorial regarding Tom Metzger and California State University, Fullerton (April 11).

In your editorial, you mentioned the fact that the Anti-Defamation League and the Afro-Ethnic Studies Department on campus were guilty of violating the First Amendment of the Constitution by asking that Tom Metzger’s “Race and Reason†television program for Group W no longer be allowed on campus.

Last week we found that The Times would not allow the cartoon Doonesbury to appear because The Times feels that “it is distasteful to us.â€

It is very interesting that when other organizations or individuals speak out they are accused of violating the First Amendment. However, when The Los Angeles Times refuses to run a cartoon strip, it is “responsible journalism.â€
