Vittles and Riddles

I must question Mary Douglas’ seemingly sarcastic tone in her review of Marvin Harris’ “Good to Eat: Riddles of Food and Culture” (View, April 8) when she advises us, “This is a splendid book to give to your vegetarian aunt.” Does this imply a “dotty old lady” who chooses not to exploit animals for ethical as well as nutritional reasons? As an ethical vegetarian who is exceedingly sensitive to the exploitation of animals, I take exception to otherwise enlightened individuals who sneer at such compassion. I hope my perception is incorrect.
