UC Santa Barbara, which dropped football after the 1971 season, will petition the NCAA to field a Division III team this fall. UCSB was a Division I team playing in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. when football was abandoned for financial reasons.
The school has fielded a club team the last three years.
UCSB students voted last spring to tax themselves $1.50 a quarter to provide the football program with $65,000 a year. Additional revenues are expected to be generated by fund-raising programs and community support, a school spokesman said.
