Tighter S. Africa Curbs Resisted

WASHINGTON — The Reagan Administration today opposed any congressional efforts to stiffen the limited economic sanctions it has imposed against South Africa, saying such moves would contain “serious and dangerous risks.â€
“This is not the time to mount punitive sanctions against South Africa, but rather to use our good offices . . . to move ahead the process of reform, . . . “ Chester Crocker, the assistant secretary of state for African affairs, told a House subcommittee as it opened hearings to explore U.S. options in the region.
