College Baseball : UNLV Moves Into Tie for PCAA Lead

The University of Nevada Las Vegas moved into a three-way tie for first place in the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. Friday by defeating Cal State Fullerton, 7-3, at Titan Field.

Las Vegas, Fullerton and UC Santa Barbara, a 9-8 winner over Fresno State, share the PCAA lead with 3-1 conference records.

The Rebels’ Tim Meamber pitched a complete game four-hitter and improved his record to 9-2. The Titans’ Mike Harkey (6-5) went 6 innings and allowed four earned runs in taking the loss.

First baseman Mike Oglesbee led Las Vegas by going 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Oglesbee scored what turned out to be the winning run on a single by Kevin Koentopp in the sixth inning.

Reed Peters hit a base-empty home run for the Rebels in the fourth.

The teams play again today and Sunday at 1 p.m.

In other Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. action:

Cal State Long Beach 15, UC Irvine 9--The 49ers rallied for 10 runs in the final two innings at Irvine to gain their first conference win.

The Anteaters (1-3, 11-14-1) had 19 hits but left 14 runners on base.

Irvine led, 9-5, going into the the top of the eighth when Long Beach (1-4, 9-17-1) scored five runs to take a 10-9 lead. Tony Felicione’s eighth home run of the year, a three-run blast, capped the inning.

Long Beach then put the game away with five more runs in the ninth.

Irvine’s Ed Clark was 3 for 3, and teammate Tom Baine extended his hitting streak to eight games with a single.

The teams play again today at 1 p.m. at Irvine.
