Youth Charged After Fatal I-405 Crash
An Irvine youth was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving and manslaughter after a collision that killed his 18-year-old passenger Tuesday morning, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The accident occurred about 1:15 a.m. on the southbound San Diego Freeway at Culver Drive when the unidentified 17-year-old driver attempted to pass a much slower truck and trailer rig, the CHP spokeswoman said. The car rear-ended the trailer and received heavy damage on the passenger’s side.
Passenger Christopher Gaar of Orange got out of the car but collapsed, the spokeswoman said. Paramedics treated him and took him to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he died.
The truck driver was not hurt.
The arrested youth suffered minor head and arm injuries.
