Smith Says Ueberroth Was Unfair

Outfielder Lonnie Smith of the Kansas City Royals said he nearly decided to take a one-year drug-related suspension from baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth rather than the alternative penalties, which include a large fine.
“If I was to be disciplined, it should have been at the time I admitted my problem,” Smith said in a story published by the Kansas City Star. “To do it now, three years later, isn’t right.
“The commissioner’s ruling wasn’t fair. He’s not fining me for what I did in 1983, but what my role was in the trial.”
Smith testified at the Pittsburgh trial of former Philadelphia Phillies caterer Curtis Strong that he purchased cocaine from Strong.
