OKLAHOMA CITY — Wendy Brown of the USC smashed the American indoor record in the women’s triple jump Saturday night, twice leaping 44 feet 3 inches in the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Brown’s jumps surpassed the previous mark of 43-9 3/4, set by Terri Turner in 1985.
Brown first broke the record on her second attempt, then matched it on her third try. She did not surpass the record in her final three attempts.
The world indoor best in the event is 44-6 3/4, set this year by Galina Chistyakova of the Soviet Union.
