Tway Scrambles His Way to a 2-Stroke Lead
ORLANDO, Fla. — Bob Tway battled severe, gusty winds for a 5-under-par 66 and a two-stroke lead Thursday in the first round of the $500,000 Hertz Bay Hill tournament.
“I got off to a good start on the downwind holes, then made some good saves to maintain a good round,†said Tway, the only player who didn’t have a bogey Thursday.
Tway, a second-year player who scored his first victory last month in San Diego, birdied three of the first four holes, then made a series of scrambling pars on the back nine.
Tom Kite, a former winner of this event, solved the putting problems that knocked him out of a playoff last week at Miami, and had a 68. Kite was tied for second with Ray Floyd, Dan Pohl and Dan Forsman.
