Tennis Roundup : Lendl Wins 18th Match in a Row
Down 3-5 in the second set, top-seeded Ivan Lendl rallied to beat Yugoslavia’s Marko Ostoja, 6-1, 7-5, Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the $385,000 Fila Trophy indoor tournament at Milan, Italy.
It was the 18th straight victory for the world’s No. 1 player.
In earlier second-round matches, third-seeded Anders Jarryd of Sweden defeated Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-4, while another Swede, second-seeded Joakim Nystrom, beat Pavel Slozil of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-2.
At Dallas, second-seeded Chris Evert Lloyd gained the quarterfinals of a $250,000 Virginia Slims tournament with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Bettina Bunge.
In a flurry of upsets, 10th-seeded Kathy Rinaldi defeated third-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, 0-6, 7-6, 6-2; Stephanie Rehe eliminated fifth-seeded Pam Shriver, 7-6, 6-4, and Robin White ousted ninth-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina, 6-2, 6-1.
