Brea : State Grant May Help Improve Arovista Park

State parks officials have recommended a grant of $304,527 for improvements at Arovista Park, Brea’s oldest and largest.

If approved by the state Legislature, the grant will be used to upgrade the grounds, add an energy-efficient lighting system and install a new irrigation system to replace one that the maintenance department “is constantly patching and repairing,†said Kathie Conrey, a Brea administrative assistant.

The grant, recommended by the California Department of Parks and Recreation, would come from proceeds of the sale of bonds under the California Park and Recreation Facilities Act, passed by voters in 1984.

This is the second year grants have been available, but the first time Brea has qualified, Conrey said. Of 534 applications received across the state, 205 were recommended for funding, Conrey said.

Next year, city officials plan to apply for another grant for a second phase of improvements at the park, which is off Imperial Highway at Berry Street. Some of the plans for a second grant include improving the barbecue areas “that are crumbling and falling apart,†Conrey said.

Officials also are considering adding recreational games, such as horseshoes and shuffleboard, that could be used by visitors from the Brea Senior Center, which is across the street from Arovista, she said.
