NEW YORK — Martina Navratilova will be the No. 1-seeded player in the Virginia Slims Championships, which will be held at Madison Square Garden March 17-23.
The seedings are based on the Women’s Tennis Assn. rankings, and Navratilova held on to her No. 1 computer ranking despite an upset loss to Kathy Jordan last week in the Virginia Slims of California.
Chris Evert Lloyd will be the No. 2-seeded player and Steffi Graf of West Germany will be seeded third, followed, in order, by Claudia Kohde-Kilsch of West Germany, Hana Mandlikova of Czechoslovakia, Pam Shriver, Helena Sukova of Czechoslovakia and Manuela Maleeva of Bulgaria.
Others who have clinched berths in the 16-player field include Zina Garison and Bonnie Gadusek.
