A 33-year-old woman gave birth Thursday to the first test-tube baby born in North County.
Both the mother, Sarah Shedd, and her 6-pound, 3-ounce son, Steven Charles Jeffrey Shedd, delivered by Caesarean section, were doing well in Pomerado Hospital in Poway.
The birth was the result of in vitro fertilization, in which eggs from Shedd were fertilized with sperm from her husband, David, 34, in a laboratory and placed in an incubator. The resulting embryos were later placed in Shedd’s uterus.
Shedd had been unable to become pregnant as the result of a condition known as endometriosis, which interferes with normal fertilization.
