The Cleveland Indians won their arbitration hearing with shortstop Julio Franco, who will get $575,000 this season instead of the $740,000 he sought. In other cases, the Philadelphia Phillies signed Glenn Wilson to a three-year contract, two days before the outfielder’s scheduled hearing; the New York Yankees avoided arbitration with Andre Robertson by signing the infielder to a one-year contract, and the Chicago White Sox avoided hearings by signing right-handed pitchers Bob James and Gene Nelson to one-year contracts.

Tim Laudner, a .238 hitter for the Minnesota Twins last season, asked for $250,000 and lost, receiving a $10,000 raise from last season to $155,000. And Mike Moore a relief pitcher for the Seattle Mariners, lost his bid for a $300,000 pay raise, when an arbitrator ruled for the club’s offer of $400,000 and rejected Moore’s $530,000 request. Moore earned $227,500 last year.
