Deporting of Taiwan Trade Aide Protested
TORONTO — About 80 demonstrators marched outside immigration offices in downtown Toronto to protest a federal deportation order against Taiwan’s top trade representative in Canada.
The abrupt decision to deport Patrick Chang is “an insult to all Chinese who fled Communist persecution,†said Tom Pang, secretary general of the Chinese Community Center of Ontario.
Chang, 46, the Canadian representative of the Chamber of Commerce of Taiwan, had been told to leave Canada by last Wednesday, but the exact reason has not yet been revealed. However, some sources linked the order to an all-expenses-paid trip arranged by Chang for several members of Parliament to Taiwan late last year.
