NHL Roundup : Washington Beats Edmonton in Overtime, 5-4
Bengt Gustafsson poked in a rebound at 3:42 of overtime Saturday night to give the Washington Capitals a 5-4 victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Landover, Md.
The Capitals have won four straight games and are unbeaten in their last 20 overtime games.
Washington wound up sweeping the season series with the defending Stanley Cup champions, 3-0. The loss snapped the Oilers’ unbeaten streak at seven games.
Jari Kurri brought Edmonton back from a 4-3 deficit with a point-blank goal at 8:24 of the third period off a feed by Glenn Anderson.
Edmonton fought back from a 3-1 first-period deficit with goals by rookie Raimo Summanen and Paul Coffey to tie the score, 3-3, midway through the second.
Bobby Gould gave Washington a 4-3 lead with a short-handed goal at 13:13 of the second period.
After getting off only 22 shots, including two in the third period, the previous night against Montreal, the Capitals managed 40 shots on Andy Moog, including 18 in the opening period.
Goals by Bobby Carpenter and Craig Laughlin 59 seconds apart gave Washington a 2-0 lead before Oiler Dave Hunter countered with a freak goal that smashed off the rear boards and hit Washington goalie Pete Peeters’ skate before trickling into the net.
Montreal 5, Detroit 3--Mario Tremblay of the Canadiens scored on a slapshot to break a 3-3 tie with 3:16 remaining at Detroit.
Montreal led, 3-2, late in the second period, but Detroit pulled even with 1:09 remaining on a fine individual effort by center Claude Loiselle. Loiselle stole the puck from Montreal’s Bobby Smith along the boards, moved into the slot and fired a 30-footer past Canadiens netminder Patrick Roy.
Buffalo 4, Hartford 2--Tom Barrasso stopped 34 shots at Hartford, Conn., as the Sabres won their fourth straight game.
The loss was the sixth in a row for the Whalers, who are last in the Adams Division.
Toronto 3, St. Louis 2--Russ Courtnall banged in Steve Thomas’ rebound at 3:32 of overtime to give Toronto the win at St. Louis.
Ken Wregget got the victory in the nets in his first appearance for the Blues after being called up from St. Catharines of the American Hockey League, where he had been sent for conditioning after straining a knee.
Pittsburgh 4, New Jersey 0--Mario Lemieux scored his 29th and 30th goals of the season and Roberto Romano stopped 27 shots at Pittsburgh as the Penguins handed the Devils their seventh straight loss.
Romano earned his second shutout of the season and fourth of his career as the Devils were held scoreless for the first time this year. The Devils are 0-10-1 since beating Detroit on Jan. 15.
Quebec 8, Chicago 5--Peter Stastny scored two goals, including the game-winner, and added three assists to lead the Nordiques at Quebec.
Stastny snapped a 5-5 tie at 5:09 of the third period when he picked up a loose puck behind two Black Hawk defenders at the Chicago blue line and raced in before putting the puck between goaltender Murray Bannerman’s legs.
Minnesota 3, Philadelphia 3--Brian Bellows scored his second goal at 6:41 of the third period as the North Stars earned an overtime tie at Philadelphia.
Philadelphia, two men short during a scramble in front of the Minnesota goal, lost its lead when Bellows re-directed teammate Neil Broten’s shot past Flyer goaltender Bob Froese.
N.Y. Rangers 3, Boston 2--Goaltender John Vanbiesbrouck stopped 35 shots and recorded his 23rd victory for the Rangers in this game at Boston.
Defenseman Willi Huber scored a third-period power-play goal to help New York offset a 37-19 shots-on-goal disadvantage.
