NBA Roundup : Barkley Leads 76ers Past Cavaliers, 111-103

Charles Barkley scored 14 points in the fourth quarter Thursday night at Richfield, Ohio, and finished with 23 as the Philadelphia 76ers broke a three-game road losing streak with a 111-103 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The victory was only the third in the last seven games for the 76ers. Cleveland lost its eighth straight.

The 76ers had a 77-70 lead after three quarters, but Barkley increased that to 85-74 by scoring Philadelphia’s first eight points of the fourth quarter. The 76ers expanded the lead to 94-81 with six minutes left on a layup by Maurice Cheeks, who scored 19 points.

Cleveland made four three-point shots--two by World B. Free and two by Ron Brewer--to get within 106-101 with 58 seconds remaining, but could get no closer.

Roy Hinson had 24 points and Free added 21 for Cleveland. Julius Erving scored 21 and Bobby Jones 18 for the 76ers.

Denver 100, San Antonio 95--Lafayette Lever scored 8 of his 20 points in the final 7 1/2 minutes, and Alex English had 23 points as the Nuggets beat the Spurs at San Antonio.

Alvin Robertson’s free throw gave the Spurs a 74-73 lead early in the fourth quarter, but Wayne Cooper scored five straight to move Denver in front for good.

Artis Gilmore collected 23 points and 16 rebounds for San Antonio, and Mike Mitchell added 20 points.

Detroit 111, Washington 109--Earl Cureton’s layup with 51 seconds left gave the Pistons an overtime victory over the Bullets at Landover, Md.

The Bullets scored the first six points in overtime, but Detroit responded with the last eight for the win.

Detroit rallied from a nine-point deficit early in the fourth period to force overtime. The Pistons trailed, 84-75, but tied the score, 103-103, on Joe Dumars’ three-point shot with 14 seconds left.

Jeff Malone scored 33 points for the Bullets.

Atlanta 100, Indiana 85--Dominique Wilkins scored 32 points and ended the Pacers’ four-game winning streak with a victory at Indianapolis.

The Hawks built a 51-31 lead with 1:25 left in the first half on a layup by Wilkins. Indiana rallied behind Herb Williams, who had 19 of his 25 points in the second half.

The Pacers pulled within 72-62 with 40 seconds left in the third quarter, but Atlanta’s Spud Webb made two free throws with 32 seconds left, and a tip-in by Jon Koncak gave the Hawks a 76-63 lead going into the final quarter.

Utah 119, New York 101--Adrian Dantley had 20 points in the third period and finished with 36 to lead the Jazz past the Knicks at Salt Lake City.

Thurl Bailey added 24 for the Jazz and Karl Malone had 19 as Utah moved ahead early in the second quarter and breezed to victory.

New York rookie Patrick Ewing managed just nine points in limited playing time in the first half and sat out the second half with sore knees.

Milwaukee 117, Chicago 97--Ricky Pierce scored 18 points and Sidney Moncrief added 17 as the Bucks snapped a two-game losing streak by stopping the Bulls at Milwaukee.

The Bucks (33-18) took a 3 1/2-game lead in the Central Division into the All-Star break.

The Bulls, playing without leading scorer Orlando Woolridge, who had a sprained right wrist, lost their third straight game.

Sacramento 115, Seattle 106--Reggie Theus had 23 points and 10 assists as the Kings knocked off the SuperSonics at Sacramento.

The Kings had a 92-83 lead when Eddie Johnson--who scored 19 points--opened the fourth quarter by making a three-point shot, and Seattle never got back into the game.

Gerald Henderson had 18 points and Al Wood added 17 for Seattle.

Dallas 115, Portland 111--Mark Aguirre scored 29 points and Rolando Blackman had 9 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter as the Mavericks staved off a Trail Blazer rally at Portland.

Portland trimmed a 15-point third-quarter Dallas lead, but the Mavericks turned off the rally with their free-throw shooting, making 25 of 32 in the game.

Derek Harper and Sam Perkins each added 20 points for Dallas. Kiki Vandeweghe had 22 for Portland.
