Steve Snyder, Royal High’s water polo coach, has been selected to coach an amateur all-star team that will tour Australia and Fiji this summer.
Snyder, who took a team to the People’s Republic of China last summer, will select high school seniors and college freshmen and sophomores from the South Bay-Santa Monica area and Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.
Royal’s Dain Hurst, who was the Marmonte League’s water polo MVP last season, was recently named ninth-team All-American by the National Water Polo Coaches Assn.
Former Crespi forward Mike Yoest, who scored a career-high 24 points for Loyola Marymount in the Lions’ 72-70 win last Saturday over the University of San Diego, was named West Coast Athletic Conference Player of the Week. The victory moved Loyola into first place in the conference.
Cal Lutheran forward Gloria Phillipps was named NAIA District III Player of the Week for her performance in three conference games last week.
Phillipps, a 5-10 transfer from Taft College, had 56 points and 51 rebounds in the three games. She is the Regals’ leading rebounder (11.3 average) and is third on the team in scoring (12.6).
Mike Carpenter, a senior at Simi Valley, won a decathlon competition with 5,677 points last Saturday at Cal State Los Angeles.
Jeff Lamonica of Polytechnic finished second with 5,373 points. Stan Williams of Long Beach Jordan was third with 4,969, followed by Mike Brooks of Westlake with 4,894.
All participants were competing unattached, as the high school season has yet to begin.
