Witherspoon Fails Title Drug Test

NEW YORK — A postfight test found that there were traces of marijuana in Tim Witherspoon’s system when he won the World Boxing Assn. heavyweight title at Atlanta last month, boxing promoter Don King said Wednesday.
Witherspoon, who took the title from Tony Tubbs on a 15-round decision Jan. 17, said Wednesday that he had smoked marijuana only once, “during a party in Philadelphia around Thanksgiving.”
Witherspoon also issued an apology, saying: “I let everyone down. I gave Don King my word that I was clean and that I didn’t use it, but I lied.”
A hearing by the Georgia Boxing Commission will be held next Monday.
Last year, Livingstone Bramble tested positive after defending the WBA lightweight title against Ray Mancini in Reno and was fined $15,000.
