First baseman Alvin Davis of the Seattle Mariners, the 1984 American League Rookie of the Year, has become the first major leaguer to lose his salary arbitration case this year.
According to the team, an arbitrator ruled that Davis would receive the $400,000 offered by the club, rather than the $550,000 Davis was seeking for the 1986 season.
Several other arbitration-bound players settled their contracts without going to arbitration. They included pitchers Charlie Hudson of Philadelphia, Mike Smithson of Minnesota and Bob Walk of Pittsburgh, outfielder Dave Henderson of Seattle, infielder-outfielder Nick Esasky of Cincinnati and catcher Dann Bilardello of Montreal.
