Senate of Pacific Nation Votes to End U.S. Control

KOROR, Palau — The Senate of the Republic of Palau voted 13 to 1 Friday to adopt a Compact of Free Association that would end U.S. administration of the Western Pacific nation and remove the American military presence there when the pact expires in 50 years. Palau, which is part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, will have a plebiscite on the agreement on Feb. 24.
