Garden Grove : Elderly Man Rescued After Bed Catches Fire
A city firefighter rescued an elderly man who fell asleep while smoking early Christmas Day and set fire to the bed in his mobile home, officials said.
The victim, Frank Stuart, described as being in his early 60s, was taken to Garden Grove Community Hospital, where he was in serious condition Wednesday with second-degree burns on his left arm and leg.
Fire officials said Stuart’s wife, Grace, smelled smoke about 2 a.m. and called the Fire Department after unsuccessfully attempting to carry her husband from the burning bedroom of the mobile home at 12560 Hester Place.
Firefighter Dennis Standrod was able to enter the residence and carried Stuart to safety, Battalion Chief Capt. Hal Freed said.
The fire caused an estimated $2,500 in damages to the bedroom.
