The Los Angeles Unified School District has agreed to a 6.4% wage increase for 32,000 members of United Teachers, Los Angeles, school officials have announced.

The across-the-board raise will be retroactive to July 1, when negotiations on a new contract began. About 16,000 teachers who have taught for 10 years or more and have master’s degrees will receive an additional 1% increase. The district’s new salary scale will range from $20,298 to $37,424.

The district said the agreement would increase wages and benefits by $63.5 million in the first year.

The district and its largest teachers’ union have yet to work out their differences on a range of non-monetary items, including mandatory reassignment, agency shop, the status of emergency credentialed teachers and the effect that a districtwide year-round schedule might have on salaries and benefits. Negotiations will resume next month.
