One woman was killed and another was injured when their car went off a 150-foot cliff after striking a sign on Coast Highway south of Corona del Mar, a CHP spokesman said Friday.
The California Highway Patrol said Cynthia J. Neilson, 36, of Dana Point died of injuries sustained in the crash. The passenger, Virginia Ochoa, 27, of Stanton, who suffered moderate injuries, was airlifted to Mission Community Hospital in Mission Viejo where she was reported in fair condition in the intensive care unit Friday.
Neilson was driving near Crystal Cove about 11:55 p.m. Thursday when her sports car drifted off the road and struck a sign, the CHP spokesman said.
Neilson applied her brakes and skidded more than 300 feet on the highway, the spokesman said. The car’s momentum carried it another 100 feet and it went over the cliff, the spokesman added.
