Legislation clearing title to more than 11,000 acres of land along the California-Nevada border and settling a century-old boundary dispute that once erupted into gunfire was passed--by voice vote and without opposition--by the House of Representatives. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Richard Lehman (D-Calif.), provides that federal grants and transfers of public land on the California-Nevada border made before the location of the state line was officially determined by the Supreme Court three years ago are not invalidated by the line’s movement. The dispute dates back to 1861 when Nevada’s territorial limits were set--encroaching 11 miles into territory claimed by California in the Sierra. Several people were injured when shooting broke out over the matter in the Susanville area in 1863.
