Honeywell Inc. will lay off 600 employees.

The company said the layoffs are part of an effort to become more competitive in the small computer and office systems market. The hourly and salaried manufacturing, engineering, marketing and support employees will be cut from facilities in Massachusetts at Lawrence, Boston, Billerica and Waltham.
