Observatory Starts Comet Club
Children 9 and younger are invited to become members of the “Halley’s Comet First Timers Club” at Griffith Observatory.
There are no fees or dues, and the “club” won’t meet again until the comet returns in 2061. Youngsters who come to see the comet at the observatory will receive “I Saw Halley’s Comet” certificates.
They may also bring or send their photographs to be placed in a time capsule that will be sealed on April 10, 1986, when the comet is closest to the Earth, and will not be opened until the comet returns in 76 years.
Wallet-sized photographs with the child’s name, birthdate, birthplace, parents’ names and telephone number on the back, may be sent to Halley Capsule, Griffith Observatory, 2800 East Observatory Road, Los Angeles 90027. Deadline is April 1.
