UCLA Reaches NCAA Soccer Final

EVANSVILLE, Ind. — A last-minute goal by UCLA forward Mike Getchell helped secure a 3-1 win over Evansville in the semifinal round of the NCAA Division 1 soccer tournament Sunday in front of a crowd of 3,000 at Black Beauty Field.
Getchell’s goal was scored off a corner kick by midfielder Doug Swanson with 50 seconds left in the game.
UCLA advances to the championship match against American University at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Seattle Kingdome.
American (19-2-2) beat Hartwick, 1-0, Saturday. UCLA is 19-1-4 and has won 11 in a row.
It is the first time since 1973 that UCLA has reached the national championship game. In 1973, the Bruins lost to St. Louis University.
Midfielder Dale Ervine had scored the Bruins’ first goal at the 26-minute mark off a pass from Getchell.
Bruin midfielder Steve Black of San Diego was taken off the field by stretcher with a possible collarbone injury in the 67th minute.
