Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Magnolia Stays Undefeated With Win Over Laguna Hills

Michelle Carter scored 18 points and grabbed 23 rebounds to lead Magnolia High School to a 49-37 victory over Laguna Hills in the opening round of the Garden Grove Tournament Saturday at Garden Grove High School.

Sophomore Dawn Borum also played well for the unbeaten Sentinels (3-0) with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

Laguna Hills fell to 0-3 with the loss.

In other Garden Grove Tournament action:

Costa Mesa 66, Santiago 24--Senior Suzanna Cowley scored 20 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Mustangs (1-2) in the first round victory over the Cavaliers. Costa Mesa jumped out to an early 23-2 lead and held a 36-11 advantage at halftime.

Upland 44, Newport Harbor 22--Chantel Deford led Newport Harbor with 9 points in this first round game. The Sailors fell to 0-3 with the loss.

Capistrano Valley 50, Huntington Beach 31--Caylin Combs scored 16 points and had 10 rebounds and teammate Heather Schoeny scored 10 points and added 10 rebounds to pace the Cougars (3-0) over the Oilers.

Rowland 42, Corona del Mar 37--The Sea Kings dropped their opening round game to the Raiders.

Cypress 72, Santa Ana 29--The Centurions advanced to the second round with an easy victory over the Saints.

Garden Grove 50, San Clemente 36--The host Argonauts had little trouble with the Tritons in their first round game.

In the Artesia Tournament:

Mater Dei 56, Artesia 40--Geri Gainey led the Monarchs with 15 points and Noelle Manfre scored 13 points, with 8 steals and 8 assists as Mater Dei defeated the Pioneers in this second round game. Kim Ellerman had 10 rebounds to lead the Monarchs, who remained unbeaten at 4-0.

In the Irvine Tournament:

Marina 42, Savanna 33--Dawn Cherroin and Maria Stuppy scored 10 points each as the Vikings (3-1) took third place with the victory. Teisha Clark had 11 points and Tammy Burns grabbed 10 rebounds for the Rebels (2-2).

In the San Gabriel Tournament:

Chino 62, Ocean View 59--Trina Vlachos scored 23 points and had 12 rebounds and Dana Douty added 10 points, 8 assists and 9 rebounds but it wasn’t enough as the Seahawks lost to the State’s No. 1-ranked Division II team in the championship game. Both Vlachos and Douty were named to the all-tournament team.

In the University Tournament:

Brea-Olinda 65, Edison 60--The Chargers trailed Brea by only one point with two minutes remaining and gave the heavily-favored Wildcats a scare in the championship game. Martha Noffsinger paced Edison with 14 points while Charlene Schuessler had 18 points for the winners.

Brea guard Carrie Egan was named the most valuable player and joined Schuessler on the all-tournament team. Edison’s Michelle Hennessey and Kristen Wilson were also named to the all-tournament team.
