A trapped marine layer Saturday night created fog thick enough to delay many takeoffs and force incoming flights to divert to Los Angeles, officials at Lindbergh Field said.
Jim Doolittle, manager of airport operations, said that visibility at Lindbergh Field was intermittently too poor to allow flights to land from 8 to 10 p.m.
The number of flights delayed or diverted was not known.
The National Weather Service said the shallow marine layer trapped by a weak wind flow will continue tonight.
