Following a nationwide trend, the San Dieguito Union High School District’s Board of Trustees has agreed to allow girls to join their schools’ football and wrestling teams.

The board approved the change unanimously Thursday night, although there have been no requests by girls to play on the boys’ teams in the two-school district, Supt. William Berrier said.

“We’ve seen it happen in other districts, so we thought we’d anticipate a request and make the change,†Berrier said, adding that the district’s athletic director agreed it was “the right thing to do under the circumstances.â€

The vote makes San Dieguito the third district in San Diego County to change its policy regarding girls and so-called “contact sports.†The Grossmont Union High School District changed its policy when Karen Davis threatened to sue after she was denied access to the football field; the San Diego Unified School District amended its policy to enable Kerry Hanley to try out for the Mira Mesa High School wrestling team.
