Girls’ Basketball Roundup : Welland Leads Brea Olinda to Irvine Tournament Final
Brea Olinda advanced to the finals of the Irvine girls’ basketball tournament Thursday night by defeating Marina, 78-39, at Irvine High School.
Denise Welland dominated the game with 26 points, 10 rebounds and 4 steals for the Wildcats. Teammate Charlene Schuessler scored 14 points as Brea Olinda improved its record to 3-0. The Vikings fell to 2-1.
In Fullerton Tournament action: Fullerton 68, Valencia 63--Hedi Shikuma scored 21 points, and Vicky Silva added 17 points to lead the Indians into the championship semifinals where they’ll meet Katella.
In non-league action:
Santa Ana Valley 52, Rancho Alamitos 24--Cathy Smith scored 20 points and Tamiko Bell and Tammy Bethune each added 10 to led the Falcons over the Vaqueros.
Santa Ana Valley is 2-0. Linne Eagean’s 8 points was tops for Rancho Alamitos.
El Dorado 56, La Habra 49--The Golden Hawks (2-0) defeated the Highlanders behind the 28-point performance of senior Jill Matyuch. Sharon Warmus had 18 points for La Habra.
Capistrano Valley 57, Santa Ana 21--Caylin Combs scored 17 points and Heather Schoney added 16 to lead the Cougars over the Saints in Mission Viejo. Capistrano Valley is 2-0.
In the San Gabriel tournament:
Ocean View 68, Crescente Valley 24--Trina Vlachos scored 15 points and Dalene Lawson added 14 points to lead the Seahawks to the championship semifinals.
