Orange County Roundup : Schmid Voted Best Offensive Player

Saddleback College quarterback Jason Schmid, who set nine school records, was named Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches of the Mission Conference. Among Schmid’s records are most touchdowns in a season (21) and most yards passing (2,483).

Schmid, who led the Gauchos to a 10-0 record and their ninth-straight conference title, was joined on the All-Conference offensive first team by five teammates: offensive guard Mark Frederick, offensive tackle Charlie Wright, center Rodney Leota, tight end Tony Palamara and placekicker Tracy Rutkowski.

On defense, end Neil Wallner and linebacker Yepi Pauu were selected to the team.

Other Orange County players named to the first team were Orange Coast College punter Gordon Moss and quarterback Ken Laszlo. Rancho Santiago players named to the team were offensive guard Jason Allen, linebacker Dan Baytosh and defensive back LaRoy Montgomery.

UC Irvine midfielder Shawn Bullock was named to the All-Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. first team for the 1985 soccer season. Bullock, a freshman from Valencia, led the Anteater defense and contributed one goal and two assists during the season.

Forward Ken Gunn, a sophomore from Huntington Beach, was named to the all-PCAA second-team. He was the Anteaters’ top scorer with six goals and three assists. Midfielder Don Edwards, a junior, received an honorable mention.

The U.S. Gymnastics Training Center opens its 1985-86 competitive season Saturday when more than 100 of the best young male gymnasts in Southern California will gather for a six-event Olympic style meet. Participants will range in ability from 8-year-olds in Class IV to 18-year-olds in Class I, including Olympic hopefuls.

The Class IV competition will begin at 10 a.m. Classes III, II, and I will start at 1:45. Spectators are welcome to attend for the price of $3 per adult and $1.50 per child. The gym is located at 15041 Bake Parkway, Unit C, in Lake Forest. For more information, call 586-0203.
