SDSU Women Defeated by Hawaii in PCAA Volleyball Playoffs
San Diego State had 20 kills and 8 blocks from outside hitter Sally Larsen, but still lost in five games to Hawaii Friday to fall out of the Pacific Coast Athletic Association women’s volleyball playoffs at Stockton.
Eleventh-ranked Hawaii (26-9), receiving 22 kills from Point Loma High School graduate Sue Eagye, beat the Aztecs, 15-7, 13-15, 9-15, 15-4, 15-13, in the opening round of the PCAA postseason tournament.
SDSU (25-19), ranked No. 18, has to wait until Sunday to see if it will be among the 32 teams invited to the NCAA playoffs. The Aztecs, who tied for fifth place in the PCAA with an 8-8 record, have qualified for the playoffs the past seven years.
“I think we have a good chance to make the playoffs,†SDSU Coach Rudy Suwara said. “We’ve been consistently ranked in the Top 20 all year.â€
Against Hawaii, the Aztecs led, 6-2, in the fifth game before the Rainbows rallied to pull out the game and match.
Kris Morton had 18 kills and six blocks for SDSU. Angelica Jackson added nine blocks.
SDSU placed two players on the All-PCAA team, which was announced Friday. Eagye and setter Liane Sato were both named to the second team.
