Clay Carroll’s Stepson Is Charged With Murder
Police in Bradenton, Fla., charged the stepson of retired major league pitcher Clay Carroll with murder after a family dispute turned into a shooting spree that left the veteran pitcher and another son wounded, and his wife dead.
Fredrick Charles Nowitzke, 26, was charged with killing his mother, Francis Carroll, 53, and wounding his stepfather, Carroll, 43, and Carroll’s son, Bret, 11. Both were listed in critical condition at a local hospital.
Police said that Nowitzke fled the family home on a motorcycle, which he abandoned a half mile from the scene of the shootings.
Nowitzke was found in a nearby woods, where he gave up without resistance, police said. He was charged with one count of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder.
No motive for the shootings was known.
