More than 100,000 left-wing demonstrators marched through downtown Athens to the U.S. Embassy calling for Greece to oust American military bases and leave the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Protesters later threw firebombs at police, who shot at them, killing a teen-ager, police said. The marchers, mostly students, commemorated a 1973 student uprising against Greece’s military regime. The ruling Panhellenic Socialist Movement and the Greek Communist Party sponsored the march, but the main opposition, the pro-Western New Democracy, refused to participate.
