San Diego Section Water Polo : McInerny’s Eight Goals Boost Coronado Past No. 6 Crawford
SAN DIEGO — Patrick McInerny scored a game-high eight goals Saturday afternoon to lead third-seeded Coronado High School past No. 6 Crawford, 16-11, in a first-round San Diego Section water polo game at Mount Carmel High.
The Islanders will play second-seeded Valhalla in the semifinals Wednesday night at Mount Carmel. The winner will move on to Saturday’s championship game at UC San Diego at 6 p.m.
Saturday’s other first-round games, also played at Mount Carmel:
Valhalla 23, Poway 13--The Norsemen (20-1) set up Wednesday’s semifinal meeting with Coronado by taking a 14-8 halftime lead and cruising to the win. Will Schnorr and Mike Allen each had five goals to lead the Grossmont League champions.
Mount Miguel 11, University 9--Rick Holdzkom had a pair of goals in the third period and two more in the fourth to lead the No. 4 Matadors (18-5) past the Dons. University shut out Mount Miguel in the second period to take a 5-4 halftime lead before Holdzkom went to work. Mount Miguel’s victory set up a meeting with top-seeded Mount Carmel in the CIF semifinals Wednesday.
Mount Carmel 13, Helix 12--The top-seeded and undefeated Sundevils (21-0) advanced to the semifinals, but it wasn’t easy. Helix, the Grossmont League’s third-place team, scored a pair of goals in the final 28 seconds to tie the score, but Mount Carmel won in its home pool on a shot at the buzzer.
